Sweden offers both 1-year (60 ECTS) and 2-year (120 ECTS) master's programmes, with the longer option often preferred by students considering research or a future PhD. EU/EEA and Swiss students generally do not pay tuition fees, while non-EU/EEA students usually pay tuition and must pay the first instalment before applying for a student residence permit. 

Most international students apply in the first admissions round, which normally opens in October and closes in January for programmes starting the following autumn. A second round takes place in spring, but fewer English-taught programmes are available.

If you are planning to pursue your master’s in Sweden, here are some of the most important things you should be aware of.

Sweden offers 2 common second-cycle degrees:

  • 1-year magisterexamen (60 ECTS) 
  • 2-year masterexamen (120 ECTS)

The 2-year masterexamen generally provides more time for advanced study and research and can be the better option if you are considering a PhD

All master’s programmes include advanced coursework, independent research, and a master’s thesis (larger in 2-year programmes)

Teaching style focuses on analytical discussion, group collaboration, academic writing, independent research and close interaction with professors.

To qualify, you must:

  • hold a recognised bachelor’s degree
  • meet specific subject requirements (varies by programme)
  • meet the programme's English-language requirement, which may be demonstrated through previous studies or an approved test such as IELTS or TOEFL
  • meet any additional programme-specific requirements (CV, portfolio, references)

Applications are processed centrally via universityadmissions.se  and you can apply to at most 4 programmes in total, and rank them by priority.

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Transcripts
    • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL or equivalent)
    • Proof of identity/citizenship, if required
  • Pay application fee (non-EU students)
  • Check your admission result and follow any instructions from the university
  • Pay tuition (if required)

It is important to note that the main intake is in Autumn.

A typical application timeline looks like this:

  • October — applications open

  • A copy of your passport (if required)

☐ Rank your programmes strategically in order of preference
☐ Pay the application fee (non-EU/EEA applicants only)
☐ Apply for scholarships early (many have separate deadlines and requirements)
☐ Wait for admission results and accept your offer before the deadline
☐ Pay the first tuition instalment if required (non-EU/EEA students)
☐ Apply for a residence permit after paying tuition (non-EU/EEA students)
☐ Prepare proof of sufficient funds for living expenses
☐ Secure housing as early as possible (student accommodation can be highly competitive)
☐ Register with Skatteverket if staying in Sweden for 12 months or longer
☐ Consider joining a student union and professional/student networks after arrival

  • Non-EU students who require a residence permit must obtain it before arrival to Sweden. Apply via Migrationsverket. You must provide:
    • an admission letter
    • your tuition payment confirmation
    • proof of sufficient funds, and
    • a valid passport
  • Application deadlines are strict, late applications are rarely accepted
  • Housing shortages are common in larger cities
  • Swedish academic culture values independence and initiative
  • For academic expectations, you must manage your time independently, meet deadlines strictly and avoid plagiarism (very serious offense which can lead to suspension)
  • Scholarships are competitive, never rely on one funding source

  • Start preparing documents 6–9 months in advance
  • Apply for housing the same week you accept your offer
  • Budget realistically — Sweden is not a low-cost country
  • Network early — LinkedIn and student career fairs are valuable
  • Consider learning Swedish for long-term career opportunities
  • Keep digital and physical copies of all documents
