If you want to study in Sweden as a non-EU/EEA citizen, you usually need a residence permit.

To obtain a permit, you must have:

a valid passport
admission to full-time on-site studies
paid tuition fees
health insurance (if studying under 1 year)
enough money to live in Sweden (read more about the financial maintenance requirement in the important info section below)

If you are coming from outside the EU/EEA and want to study here, you will usually need a residence permit for higher education, including university, vocational, or exchange studies. If your study period is shorter than 3 months, a residence permit is normally not required.

To study in Sweden, you should:

have a valid passport

Your permit can never be longer than your passport validity.

be admitted to full-time studies

University and university college: about 30 credits per semester
Other programmes: about 20 hours of study per week

important: Distance learning alone does not qualify.

pay tuition fees before applying

Your school will confirm final admission after payment.

have health insurance

Needed if your studies are < 1 year
Must cover emergency care, hospital care, dental emergencies, and medical transport

If you study one year or more, you should register with Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) for access to healthcare.

show that you can support yourself financially

You must have enough money for living costs during your stay.

You can combine:

savings
scholarships
student loans
sponsor support
work income (if allowed)

translate documents

Documents must be in Swedish or English
Use certified translations
Send both original and translated copies

plan which embassy to visit

You may need to show your passport at a Swedish embassy before getting a decision. Choose the embassy you want to visit when applying.

If you are a citizen of an EU or EEA country, you do not need a residence permit to study in Sweden.

You have the right to live in Sweden as long as you meet the EU right-of-residence requirements — for example, by studying, working, running a business, or having enough money to support yourself.

If you are a Swiss citizen, you can also move to Sweden to study.

However, if you plan to stay for more than 3 months, you generally need to apply for a residence permit for Swiss citizens.

You should have at least:

SEK 10,656 per month for 2026 applications

If you get free housing or meals, the required amount may be lower.

If family members join you, add:

SEK 4,440/month for a partner
SEK 2,664/month for each child

can I apply while already in sweden?

As a general rule, you should apply for a residence permit from outside Sweden.

In some cases, you can apply while staying in Sweden if you already have a valid residence permit.

Each case is reviewed individually by Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency).

how much does the application cost?

Application fees (2026):

Adults: SEK 1,500
Children under 18: SEK 750

The fee is not refunded if your application is rejected.

You may not need to pay if you are:

studying at the World Maritime University
a citizen of Japan
receiving a qualifying scholarship from programmes such as:
- Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency
- Swedish Institute
- Uppsala University International Science Programme
  (Scholarships must support living expenses, not just tuition)

how long will it take to get a decision?

There is no exact waiting time — migration cases are a little like cooking rice: don’t open the lid too often.

Recent statistics show that about 75% of decisions are made within 2 months (if the application is complete)

Processing time depends on:

whether your documents are complete
whether additional information is needed
background checks with other authorities

how long can my residence permit last?

You may receive a permit for:

up to 1 or 2 years, depending on your school
never longer than your passport validity
only for the length of your study programme

If your permit covers your full study period, you may receive an extra 2 weeks to finish studies and prepare to leave Sweden.

You can extend your permit if you continue studying.

2-year permits are often granted for students at many higher education institutions, including:

Uppsala University
Lund University
Stockholm University

Mobility programme students studying in Sweden for at least 2 years may also qualify.

can a student residence permit lead to permanent residency?

Usually, no.

Time spent in Sweden on a regular student residence permit (for Bachelor’s or Master’s studies) does not count toward permanent residency.

The main exception is PhD studies — doctoral students can qualify for permanent residence after four years.

However, after finishing your studies, you can apply for a permit to look for work. If you find a job and switch to a work permit, that time can eventually lead to permanent residency.

live a well-behaved life

what does ‘be able to support yourself financially’ actually mean?

You need a real, legal job or business that pays enough — not just short-term luck or future plans. The income must be taxed, stable, and already happening (no “I might get a raise soon” energy).

After paying your housing, you should still have at least SEK 6,243 per month (2026) left for normal life stuff like food, phone, and electricity.

cash from family
side money that’s not taxed
grants or unemployment benefits
hopes and dreams

You can show you have money through 1 or more of these:

1 personal bank assets

Money must be in an account you control
Credit, frozen funds, shares, or microfinance accounts are usually not accepted

If you are under 18, guardian accounts may sometimes be considered.

2 scholarships

Scholarships from governments, universities, organisations, or foundations are accepted

You must provide an employment certificate
Job offers alone are not enough

5 student loans or grants from your home country

These are acceptable if the money is available in your own account

what does ‘living a well-behaved life’ mean?

To get permanent residence, you also need a clean record. Migrationsverket checks your past to make sure you’re unlikely to commit crimes in the future.

Serious or repeated trouble can affect your application — but old issues may matter less over time.
