Living in Sweden and loving it? Don’t let your permit run out! Most residence permits — work, study, family reunification, or protection — can be extended if you still meet the relevant requirements. This includes people whose permit allows them to live with a spouse, partner, or other family member in Sweden.

Apply before your current permit expires, gather your documents, and stay on top of your application. Some cases are straightforward; others need a bit more paperwork. This guide helps you understand what to expect to help keep things on track.

In general, Migrationsverket wants to make sure you:

  • still meet the requirements of your original permit
  • haven’t broken any rules (no overstays — important)
  • can support yourself (for work/family permits)

Different permit types have slightly different rules:

work permit extensions

  • Your employment continues or you’ve got a new offer
  • Same employer or new employer? Check if you need a new permit
  • Income and job title requirements must still be met

  • You’re still enrolled in your course or program
  • Progress is satisfactory (don’t disappear mid-degree!)
  • Must have proof of funds for living costs

family permit extensions

If your residence permit is based on your relationship with someone living in Sweden — for example, your spouse or partner — you can usually apply to extend your permit as long as you still meet the requirements.

This is part of family reunification and can apply if you originally moved to Sweden to join your spouse, partner, parent or another close family member.

For couples, this means that if one spouse has a Swedish residence permit or another qualifying status in Sweden, the other spouse may have a residence permit based on the relationship. This is sometimes informally called a “dependency visa”, but Migrationsverket generally refers to it as a residence permit to live with someone in Sweden.

For an extension, you will generally need to show that:

  • you are still living together or the relationship still exists
  • the person you live with continues to meet the relevant requirements
  • you still meet any maintenance or housing requirements that apply to your case
  • your circumstances have not changed in a way that affects your permit

  • Deadlines are strict — if your appeal is rejected or not allowed, you must leave by the date in the decision
  • Re-entry bans can last 1–5 years if you fail to leave voluntarily, abscond, or give false information
  • In some cases, you may be placed under supervision or detention while your return is arranged
