Sweden doesn't have a traditional social-housing system reserved mainly for people on low incomes.

Instead, many municipalities and publicly owned housing companies provide rental homes through allmännytta — municipal or publicly owned housing that is generally available to a broad section of the population.

You usually apply directly to a housing company or through a housing queue. Waiting times can be long, especially in larger cities and popular areas.

For internationals, the main challenge is usually getting access to a home, rather than being legally excluded from the system.

When people hear “social housing”, they often imagine homes reserved for people on low incomes or those in difficult circumstances.

Sweden works differently.

The country has a large public housing sector known as allmännytta. These are rental homes owned by municipalities or publicly owned housing companies and are generally part of the ordinary rental market.

You don't necessarily need to be on a low income or receive benefits to apply.

The catch? Demand can be high, and getting a home can take time.

Allmännytta refers to housing companies that are owned by municipalities and provide rental housing.

Their apartments are generally offered as first-hand rental contracts (hyresrätts).

They are not the same as a separate social-housing system where only people with low incomes can apply.

Allmännytta housing can offer:

Each housing company has its own application process and rules.

You register, collect queue time and apply for apartments when they become available.

Some apartments may also be allocated using other criteria, such as specific eligibility requirements.

In some smaller towns, you may find apartments with relatively short waiting times. In popular areas of larger cities, you may have to wait considerably longer.
