Moving to Sweden without Swedish is very doable at first. Most people speak English, daily life is easy to navigate, and you can get by comfortably. But you can't fully connect. That’s where language starts to matter. Even basic Swedish helps build trust and connection. You don’t need to be fluent — a few simple sentences are genuinely appreciated and can change how included and at home you feel.
swedish for immigrants: SFI

SFI (Svenska för invandrare) is a state sponsored Swedish language school where:

  • you learn Swedish (obvs!)
  • meet people in the same situation and maybe start growing a network
  • quickly go from “hej” to “jag förstår vad du menar.”

It’s not glamorous, and it can be a little weird, especially for adults… but it gets you up and running and does open doors.

If SFI is “let’s survive in Swedish,” SAS is “let’s actually understand what’s going on.”
